San Miguel {final take}

I introduced this project in September and shared all our plans for San Miguel. As with life, things changed and we had to pivot on some design decisions as my client decided she would not be staying in her home long term. So, we quickly reduced the amount of painting we were going to do and eliminated the wallpaper. I was a little sad, because I loved what we had planned, but totally understood the need to make the house a little less personal when she’s ready to sell.

Instead of painting all the rooms we only tackled the dining room, den, the master suite and kitchen island. Small but dramatic changes that you can see in our before and after shots below. I think my favorite thing is all the new light fixtures. I don’t think people understand how important the right lighting can do for a room.

For the dining room, we used a dark shade of blue on the walls and kept all the trim white. This high contrast felt modern and was much more cost effective. Fully upholstered dining chairs are a must to keep your guests comfortable for those long meals. The design of the new chandelier and the scale is so much better than what she had.

On the other side of the foyer (across from the dining room) we created a cozy den for watching movies, reading a book or taking an afternoon nap. The chaise lounges can be easily pushed together to create the perfect spot for cuddling. We painted the walls a darker shade of neutral and accented with blue, black and gold.

In the family room, my client wanted an oversized sectional with a slipcover. To be honest, I wasn’t in love with having such a large piece. I had hoped to do something a little smaller and have two accent chairs, but we are designing for our clients and she loves it.

It’s amazing what the right furniture can do for a space and this breakfast room is the perfect example. My client had the black table and I love the chairs we used around it. The frames are so fun! Painting the island black and changing the light fixtures were the perfect finishing touches.

If you are living in a home that feels “builder basic” then I highly recommend starting with some new lighting and paint colors. Just those two changes made a huge impact on this project. If you’re feeling overwhelmed and need some advice on decorating a room (or two) in your home, then book a virtual consultation with me today. I’d love to help you!
