Don’t Be Afraid of Wallpaper
Wallpaper has always been a favorite of mine. It’s been part of every home I’ve owned, and it’s something I always recommend to clients when it works with their design. From a bold lemon print in a kitchen powder bath to a subtle grasscloth pattern on a dining room ceiling, wallpaper adds personality in a way few other finishes can.
I have so many clients who are hesitant to use wallpaper because of a bad experience with removal. When the walls are prepped correctly before the paper is applied, there should be no issues with removing it down the road. A good installer knows how to prepare the surface, match patterns and hide seams. When those steps are done well, you don’t have to be afraid of wallpaper!
In our current home, there is wallpaper in both guest bathrooms and the dining room. I had to really convince my husband on the pattern for the dining room. I ordered a large sample and taped it up on the wall for days before he agreed. Now, it’s one of his favorite rooms!
Many people don’t believe that wallpaper can be installed in bathrooms, but I’m here to bust that myth. Again, if properly installed, and if you use the exhaust fan during showers, your wallpaper can look good as new for years. I like to use it in bathrooms to give the space much needed color and pattern as most of the other finishes are usually neutral.
I always suggest visiting your local wallpaper shop, but if you don’t have one then online is the next best place. A quick Google search of “designer wallpaper” gives you a lot of options. Order samples and make sure you hire a professional to tell you how many rolls you’ll need. Thibaut is one of my favorite manufacturers and they offer a search to find a local retailer.
