I don’t do them often, but we design beautiful offices at Jennifer Taylor Design! For this project, the clients were expanding and wanted to take the opportunity to update the entire office. Paint, new flooring, updated reception area, a new conference room and give the owner an office he could be proud of.

We first tackled the renovation phase as the contractor was ready to start. This included vinyl plank flooring in the public areas, carpet for the offices, paint colors, lighting and a glass partition wall. We opted for glass to open up the space while still providing some privacy. Plus, we had to give their bull and bear art a place of honor!

The brown door you see in this photo is the only entrance into the office, so instead of walking into a very long hallway - clients are now welcomed by a reception area filled with color and comfortable furnishings. Before it was a small, windowless room with random chairs and too many mirrors.

The expansion included a large corner office they wanted to turn into a conference room for more formal meetings. To stay in budget, we kept the shiplap paneling, but with the magic of paint and trust from the client I gave it a brand new look! Also, the wood blinds were not doing these windows any favors. Sleek roller shades were the perfect solution.

I took advantage of the room’s shape by creating a cozy seating area in the corner. The two leather arm chairs with a custom end table create the perfect spot to end a long day or close a deal with your favorite bourbon. The conference table was also custom made by a very talented local artisan. I highly recommend Brian Kelly at Old Tree Furniture Company. He is patient, creative and delivers!

Right outside the conference room was this awkward spot that was created during the expansion. A unique cabinet with a few curated accessories and mirror feels like it was always meant to be there.

Finally, we took on the owner’s office. I have to be honest and say this room took the longest to design. We would present our ideas and get lots of “I don’t like it, but I don’t know why.” We partnered with Perdue Office Interiors and thankfully they had a wide range of manufacturers we could pull from to get the final result.

I kept the furniture layout the same as it functioned well, but each piece was thoughtfully designed. There’s a balance of workspace, meeting space, storage and display.

Our client had a lot of special pieces, so I designed the floating shelves to give each item a place of honor. My favorite is a box of letters that are very meaningful to him. Below are file drawers for all the paperwork that comes with any office. I love the wood finish we selected. It’s just enough contrast without being too busy.

The accent wall was created using simple trim and a darker shade of paint. Again, we used Brian Kelly to make a custom round table for daily meetings. The base is solid walnut with a concave groove detail around the base. This was my favorite piece in the entire project!

I’ve been back to this office a few times. Once for Christmas decorating and again for the photo shoot. The office manager told me that the clients absolutely love the transformation and the staff do too. I recently started a new project with someone who saw my work here and wanted to give her home office a facelift. I love referrals!

This project brought a lot of challenges and lessons learned, but the end result was worth it. If you’re thinking about updating your office or even a workspace at home, this project is an example of how an interior designer makes all the difference.
