Sorority House Design Ideas: 5 Easy Ways to Refresh Your Chapter House
If your sorority house is feeling a little tired, you don't always need a major renovation to make a big impact. Over the years I've worked on several sorority house projects and I've found that some of the most successful updates are also the simplest. Whether you're working with a large budget or just looking for a few fresh ideas, these design tips can help create a chapter house that feels more welcoming and memorable for both current members and alumni.
Update Your Lighting
Lighting is one of the easiest ways to update a room. In this space, the existing chandelier was too small and installed too close to the ceiling. I replaced it with a fixture that was larger and had a more unique shape. The new light immediately gave the room more presence and helped it feel more intentional.
Add Function Without Sacrificing Style
In this living space we needed to incorporate multiple study areas. Instead of traditional end tables, I used desks on each side of the sofa. The lamp can be used by someone studying or by someone sitting on the sofa. Pillows are another easy way to update a tired space. The yellow fabric tied into the sorority colors and complemented the accent wall. It was a simple change that made a big difference.
Celebrate Your History
Most sorority houses have decades of history worth celebrating. In this living space, I wanted to showcase photos from previous generations of sisters. I searched through years of scrapbooks to find the perfect images for the mantel display. Not only can current members appreciate the women who came before them, but alumni enjoy seeing familiar faces when they visit. Using all black and white photographs helped create a cohesive display. Check out the entire room in a previous post.
Display Collections Together
My final idea has to do with collections. For this sorority house, they had dozens of owl figurines scattered throughout the building. Instead of spreading them out, I brought them together on these shelves where they could really be appreciated. This idea works with almost any collection. When similar items are grouped together, they create a much stronger visual impact than when they are scattered throughout a space. You can see this idea and more on a previous journal post.
Whether you're updating a chapter house one room at a time or planning a larger renovation, thoughtful design choices can make a lasting impression. The best sorority houses balance beauty, function, and tradition while creating spaces that members are proud to call home. If you're considering updates to your sorority house and would like professional guidance, I'd love to help.
