Simple Ways to Make Your Home Feel Like Fall
I promise this is not going to be another post about adding colorful throws, candles or pillows to make your home feel like fall. I want to give you some unique, but simple things you can add around your home to give it a little refresh as we move into the cooler months. Everything I’m recommending can be found on my new ShopMy page.
Wicker or anything woven is a great way to bring warmer colors and texture into a room. We have a large basket in our family room that holds all of our extra blankets. On my kitchen island, I have a wicker wine bottle holder along with an oversized woven tray. You could even add a small basket with a plant to your kitchen table. I bet you already have something tucked away in a closet that would make this idea super easy!
Pretty lampshades are all the rage on Instagram these days and I’m here for it. Why settle for a plain white lampshade when you can have one covered in a pretty fabric? My biggest piece of advice is to make sure your shade is the right size. You never want to see the knob or the harp.
Anthropologie has so many options right now or give Etsy a search if you want something a little more custom. And if you don’t have a table lamp that needs a new shade, think about adding pretty shades to your chandelier instead.
Your bedroom is another room that could use some fall fun by adding lots of layers. I plan to take my own advice on this one for my bedroom. My phone is full of screenshots of beautiful beds, but I’m having such a hard time achieving that. It’s mainly my wallet that is keeping me from the bed of my dreams. Attached is a screenshot I’ve had saved on my phone since March. Not necessarily my style, but the layering and pattern mixing is so good.
Each bed needs to start with a neutral base. I love using this coverlet by Taylor Linens for my projects. The cream is the perfect soft white and it’s machine washable. Match your sheets and pillow cases to the coverlet so when you fold the coverlet back, everything is the same color.
I like to stack my sleeping pillows behind decorative shams. For a king bed, I suggest three square shams. The fabric for these can be simple or bold. I prefer bold since they’ll be the focal point at the head of the bed. Finally, add a wide lumbar in front of the shams for the perfect finishing touch!
I don’t love a dust ruffle as they never fit properly, but if you have one - keep it simple. If your shams are more plain, then match the ruffle to the shams. Like in the photo above.
Use a folded, fluffy duvet at the foot of the bed instead of quilts. There’s just something about this look that I really love. I recommend matching the duvet to your shams. If you want to add one more layer, you could do a folded quilt under your duvet.
My last and favorite idea is to add something vintage to your home. Brass candlesticks, a stack of old books or a piece of pottery can instantly give your space more character. Antique markets with multiple vendors are my favorite source. We have a few in Monticello and I shop them every few months. I also like picking up pieces when we travel. Or shop your cabinets. You never know what you might have tucked away!
I found this bamboo magazine holder while I was in Atlanta for a design conference and it’s perfect in our bathroom. The blue and white bowl in our guest bathroom holds customized matchbooks and was a $5 find at a vintage market. The English platter on my kitchen counter came from a vendor on Etsy. None of these pieces were expensive, but they add a collected feel that you just can’t get from buying everything new.
Making your home feel like fall doesn’t have to mean pumpkin scented candles, orange pillows or buying a whole new set of seasonal decor. Sometimes a few small changes are all it takes to make your home feel a little warmer and cozier for the season. I’ve linked some of my favorite fall finds, along with plenty of other things I have in my home, on my ShopMy page.
