My Kitchen Design is Coming Together

It’s been a busy week on Pine Street and the {planning} phase of my remodeling project is moving forward, quickly! I had Tallahassee Kitchen Center over to measure for cabinets, my favorite tile installer told me how much tile I need to order, my favorite carpenter and I reviewed my design for the fireplace and Southern Flooring measured for new floors.

At first, I was really struggling with my cabinets. I had TKC price two cabinet brands they carry. At first, I was set on the less expensive option. I just wanted white cabinets, simple doors and not a lot of custom features. But, once I saw my sample door in the only “white” they offer, I began to second guess. It was SO WHITE and not the soft white I normally specify for my client’s kitchens and I didn’t love it with my potential counter samples. But then I got the estimate back on my floors and it was $1000 more than I had in my budget. So, I’m sticking with the lower priced cabinets and pinching my pennies on everything else!

The other big development in the budget department is my fireplace tile selection. I originally selected this beautiful tile from Cle Tile, but once I went to purchase and saw the freight charges - I had to go in a different direction. 25 square feet of tile was going to cost $235 to ship and the tile itself was only $360. That didn’t make financial sense, so it was back to the drawing board. Or should I say my local home improvement store. I found this tile at Lowe’s and it’s a great alternative. Same price as the tile I loved, but no freight!

As I mentioned in my previous post, four of my selections account for 80% of my budget. Cabinets, counters, appliances and floors. I’m trying to keep everything under $50,000 and here is where by budget is today:

  • Cabinets - $16,900

  • Counters - $4,300

  • Appliances - $8,000

  • Floors - $9,715

  • Fireplace & Built-In - $2,000

  • Total So Far…$40,915

As you can see, my $50,000 is not looking too good as I still have to purchase tile, lighting, plumbing fixtures, demo a wall and get everything painted. Oh, and cabinet hardware and pay all the trades to install everything!
